The Ceiling You Didn’t Choose

Hello there. ๐ŸŒฟ

Spring is beginning to properly arrive on the Sunshine Coast – that first stretch of genuinely warm mornings, new growth pushing through garden beds that were bare only a few weeks ago. There’s something about this particular shift in the season that feels well suited to what I want to explore today: the quiet expansion of questioning your beliefs about what’s possible for your own life.

Most people carry a belief about their own capacity that was never actually chosen. It simply accumulated – early, quietly, without much scrutiny – until it stopped feeling like a belief at all and started feeling like a plain fact. I’m not the ambitious type. I’m not good with money. That kind of opportunity isn’t really for someone like me.

These beliefs have origins, even when they don’t feel like they do.

Sometimes the origin is a single, specific moment – an offhand comment from a teacher or parent, a comparison made once between siblings or classmates, a piece of feedback delivered carelessly and absorbed permanently. Sometimes it’s slower and more diffuse – years of noticing what got praised, what got quietly discouraged, what people who looked like you or came from where you came from seemed to be allowed to reach for.

None of this makes the belief a lie, exactly. It made sense as an interpretation of the evidence available at the time. But it does make the belief traceable – and traceable beliefs are ones worth examining honestly, rather than treating as permanent fact.

Client Story: David

Names have been changed to protect client privacy.

David came to see me describing himself, almost as an aside, as “not really a leadership person.” It wasn’t presented as a complaint – more as a simple, settled fact about who he was, the kind of thing that didn’t need further examination.

As we talked, it became clear the belief had a very specific origin. Early in his career, a manager had passed him over for a team-lead role with a comment that stuck: “You’re better as a strong number two – some people just aren’t built to run the show.” David had taken that comment at face value and quietly built the rest of his career around it, consistently positioning himself just below the visible leadership roles, telling himself it was simply his nature.

When we traced the belief back to its source, something shifted. It wasn’t a fact about David – it was one manager’s read of him, at one point in time, that had never been tested since. David hadn’t chosen to stop leading. He’d simply absorbed someone else’s assessment and never questioned it.

That didn’t mean leadership was suddenly right for him. It meant the decision was finally his to make, rather than one that had been quietly made for him over a decade earlier.

This week’s challenge: tracing the ceiling back to its source

I’d like to invite you into something gently investigative this week – not a full excavation, just an honest look. Pick one belief you hold about your own capacity that feels more like fact than opinion. Something you’ve said or thought many times: I’m not the type who does that. That’s just not realistic for me.

Sit with it for a moment and ask, honestly, where it came from. Was there a specific moment – a comment, a comparison, a piece of feedback – that you can point to? Or has it built up more gradually, from years of small signals about what was expected of someone like you?

You don’t need to resolve anything by the end of this exercise. The goal isn’t to instantly dismantle the belief – it’s simply to see it clearly enough to recognise that it has a history, rather than treating it as an unchangeable fact about who you are. Beliefs with a traceable history are, by definition, not permanent truths. They’re conclusions drawn once, from limited evidence, that may or may not still hold up.

If it feels useful, notice too how the belief shows up practically in your week – the small decisions it quietly influences, the things it talks you out of before you’ve properly considered them. You don’t need to override any of it. Just notice.

Seasonal Wisdom – Early Spring on the Sunshine Coast

Early spring here has a particular honesty to it. The garden hasn’t fully decided what it’s becoming yet – some branches are still bare, others are already thick with new growth, and there’s no way to tell from a single glance which plants are simply running late and which genuinely aren’t going to bloom this year.

It requires a kind of patient, curious attention. Not assuming the bare branch is dead. Not assuming the slow bloomer is behind. Just watching, honestly, to see what’s actually there.

That same quality of attention is useful for the beliefs we carry about ourselves. Not assuming the “I’m just not that type of person” story is settled fact. Not assuming the parts of yourself that have been quiet for a long time have nothing left to offer. Just watching, honestly, to see what’s actually there – and what might still be getting ready to grow. ๐ŸŒฟ

Notice with gentle curiosity: If I traced this belief back far enough, whose voice would I actually find underneath it?
