Hello there, wellness seeker!
Have you ever had that feeling that there’s something inside you waiting to be expressed? A voice, a perspective, or a creative energy that’s uniquely yours but somehow gets muffled in the noise of everyday life?
This month, we’re embarking on a journey together to explore authentic expression – that magical place where what you share with the world perfectly aligns with who you truly are inside.
The Voice That’s Waiting to Be Heard
I believe that each of us has a voice that’s entirely our own – a way of expressing that nobody else on this planet can offer. It’s not about having the perfect words or being the most eloquent speaker. It’s about allowing your unique perspective, insights, and energy to flow through your expression without excessive filtering or editing.
Think about those moments when you’ve heard someone speak and felt an immediate resonance, a sense that they’re speaking directly from their heart. There’s a quality to authentic expression that bypasses our analytical minds and connects straight to our hearts. That’s the power of a voice that’s found its authentic flow.
But let’s be honest – finding and using our authentic voice can feel surprisingly challenging, can’t it? Over the years, many of us have layered filters over our natural expression. We’ve learned to edit ourselves, to speak how we think others want us to speak, or to hold back parts of ourselves that feel too vulnerable to share.
Why We Lose Touch With Our Authentic Voice
I see this all the time in my work with clients – wonderful, insightful people who have somehow disconnected from their natural voices. If you’re feeling this way, please know you’re not alone. There are so many reasons we might lose touch with our authentic expression:
Maybe you received messages growing up about what was “appropriate” to express or how you should sound. Perhaps you were told to “speak like a lady” or to “man up” in your communication.
Or maybe you’ve crafted a “professional voice” that’s become so habitual you use it everywhere, even when you’re trying to express something deeply personal.
Perhaps you’ve had experiences where your authentic expression was met with criticism or dismissal, and you learned it was safer to filter yourself heavily.
Some of us have developed such strong inner critics that we edit our words before they even reach our lips, filtering out the spontaneity and authenticity in our desire to “get it right.”
Understanding these patterns isn’t about judging ourselves but about recognizing the journey back to our authentic voice with compassion and curiosity.
This Week’s Practices: Reconnecting With Your Voice
I’m so excited to share these simple but powerful practices that can help you begin reconnecting with your authentic voice this week. These are the same practices I’ve used with clients who have experienced amazing breakthroughs in their self-expression.
1. The Voice Awakening Practice
This is where it all begins – a simple practice to help you start listening to the voice within:
1. Find a quiet moment alone where you won’t be interrupted
2. Place one hand gently on your throat and one on your heart
3. Take three deep, nourishing breaths
4. Ask softly: “What wants to be expressed through me?”
5. Then simply listen without judgment
What arises may surprise you. It might be a message you’ve been avoiding, a creative impulse you’ve been ignoring, or simply a truth you haven’t acknowledged. Whatever emerges, greet it with curiosity rather than judgment. This is your authentic voice beginning to wake up.
2. The Voice Recording Practice
I know, I know – most of us cringe at the sound of our recorded voice! But trust me on this one. Recording and listening to yourself can be truly transformative:
1. Find a quiet, private space where you feel comfortable
2. Record yourself speaking for 2 minutes about something that matters to you
3. Speak without planning or editing – just let it flow
4. Listen back with compassion, not criticism
5. Notice: Where does your voice sound most alive? Where does it hesitate?
Pay special attention to the qualities of your voice when you’re speaking about something that matters to you. That engaged, passionate quality is often your authentic voice shining through. The places where you hesitate or your voice becomes flat might show where you’re disconnecting from your authentic expression.
3. The Three-Minute Stream
This writing practice is one of my favourites for helping people bypass their inner editor and access more authentic expression:
1. Take a blank page or open a new document
2. Set a timer for 3 minutes
3. Write continuously without lifting your pen (or fingers from keyboard)
4. No editing, crossing out, or judging what comes
5. Just let your authentic voice flow onto the page
Afterward, review what you’ve written with curiosity. Look for phrases, ideas, or expressions that surprise you or feel particularly resonant. These are often clues to your authentic voice – the expressions that came through before your inner editor could catch them!
4. Vocal Architecture Assessment
Our environments have such a powerful impact on our ability to express authentically. Take some time this week to assess:
1. Where do you feel most comfortable expressing yourself?
2. What elements of that environment support your authentic voice?
3. What one change could you make to your daily spaces to better support authentic expression?
Sometimes simple adjustments like creating a designated “expression space” in your home, reducing distractions, or adding elements that inspire you can significantly impact your ability to access your authentic voice.
Your Week 1 Challenge
This week, I invite you to commit to one specific practice to reconnect with your authentic voice. Choose the one that most resonates with you from the practices above, or create your own approach that feels right for you.
The key is consistency – even five minutes daily will create more impact than an hour once a week. Small, regular moments of authentic expression build the pathways that make it easier to access your voice when you need it most.
As you move through this week, notice with gentle awareness:
• When does your authentic voice emerge naturally?
• What circumstances make it easier for you to express authentically?
• What internal or external factors seem to muffle your true voice?
These observations will provide valuable insight as we continue our exploration of authentic expression throughout the month.
Join the Journey
I’m so excited to walk this path with you! Throughout this week, I’ll be sharing daily practices on social media to support your authentic expression journey. Follow along on Instagram, Facebook, or LinkedIn for regular inspiration and practical exercises.
I’d love to hear your experiences with finding your authentic voice. What helps you express more authentically? What challenges are you facing? Comment through socials or reach out directly to share your journey.
Remember: Your authentic voice is your greatest gift. The world needs your unique expression in a way that only you can provide. Let’s begin unveiling it together, one gentle practice at a time.
With warmth and belief in your voice,
