The Cost of Running on Empty

Hello again. 🌿

The Sunshine Coast is well into spring now β€” warmer days arriving more often, the light lasting longer into the evening. It’s a season that asks for a certain amount of energy, socially and otherwise, as things pick up pace after winter’s quieter stretch. Which made it feel like the right week to look honestly at what happens when there isn’t quite enough energy to meet that pace.

Pushing through works, at least for a while. That’s precisely what makes it so easy to keep doing, and so easy to miss the cost of.

The Quiet Signs

The signs you’re running on empty rarely announce themselves clearly. They tend to arrive sideways β€” a shorter temper than usual, a flatness that settles in by Wednesday, a body that’s noticeably harder to get moving in the mornings. None of it looks dramatic enough, on its own, to stop and investigate.

That’s part of what makes running on empty so persistent. Each individual sign is small enough to explain away. Together, they tend to describe something real β€” reserves that have been drawn on for a while without being properly replaced.

There’s a difference between genuine resilience and simply pushing through on empty. Resilience is sustainable across a long stretch. Pushing through on empty borrows from tomorrow to cover today, and the bill, sooner or later, comes due.

Client Story: Priya

Priya (not her real name) first came to see me describing a stretch of months that had gone, by her account, “fine.” Nothing catastrophic had happened. She’d simply kept going β€” through a demanding work period, a family commitment that ran longer than expected, the ordinary accumulation of a busy season.

It was only once things quietened down that the cost became visible. She found herself unable to properly enjoy the rest she’d been waiting for, snapping at people she loved over small things, feeling flat in moments that should have felt good. The signs you’re running on empty had been there all along β€” she simply hadn’t had the space to notice them while she was still pushing through.

What helped wasn’t a single dramatic change. It was learning to recognise those quieter signs earlier β€” the shortness, the flatness, the reluctance to get moving β€” as genuine information rather than personal failings to push past. Once she could name them honestly, she could respond to them far sooner than she used to.

This week’s challenge: naming it honestly

This week, notice honestly whether any of the quiet signs you’re running on empty have been present for you lately β€” the shorter temper, the Wednesday flatness, the reluctance in the mornings. There’s no need to fix anything immediately, and no need for self-criticism if you find one or two of them present. Simply name what’s actually there. Naming it accurately is often the thing that makes a genuine response possible, rather than another round of pushing further through.

Seasonal Wisdom β€” Mid-Spring on the Sunshine Coast

Spring on the Sunshine Coast asks a lot of the garden β€” new growth, longer days, warmer conditions arriving more often. Not everything keeps pace evenly. Some plants push ahead quickly. Others need a little longer, drawing more carefully on what they’ve stored.

There’s nothing wrong with needing more time to keep pace with a demanding season. It isn’t a failure of the plant. It’s simply a matter of what it has available to draw on right now.

Notice with gentle curiosity: Which of the quiet signs of running on empty have I been pushing past lately?
